A Cure for the Blues

Been suffering from the blahs? Me, too. But not so much anymore. Not after all this. Here’s what offered just the pick-me-up I needed (but rest assured, you really don’t need a beach or even a trip. What you need is faith, hope, and unhurried time with your family. Good food doesn’t hurt either.): TakeRead the whole post >>

Good-bye, Summer. Hello, Fall.

The summer is waning despite the sticky 90-degree weather we endured last week. Pears are back in season, which makes my sweet Rachel so happy because there’s nothing she loves more than sinking her teeth into a ripe, juicy pear. We’re spending our Saturdays on the soccer field sidelines again. Madeline loves the game andRead the whole post >>

[this moment]

One of these days I’m really going to miss those frog legs.    {this moment} – A Friday ritual. A single photo – no words – capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. If you’re inspired to do the same, visit SoulemamaRead the whole post >>

Vacation Images and a Few Words, Too

Two weeks ago I practiced the art of doing nothing (and I’m finally getting around to writing about it now because we’ve had a lot more to do than nothing since returning home). So did my children. We were busy; yet, we weren’t. The paradox of vacation. We had no schedule to stick to, errandsRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
