Merry Christmas!

Moonless darkness stands between.Past, the Past, no more be seen! But the Bethlehem star may lead meTo the sight of Him Who freed meFrom the self that I have been.Make me pure, Lord: Thou art Holy;Make me meek, Lord: Thou wert lowly; Now beginning, and always,Now begin, on Christmas day. -Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) Merry Christmas! Noise

“Oh, the noise! Oh, the noise! Noise! Noise! Noise! That’s one thing he hated! The NOISE! NOISE! NOISE! NOISE!” From Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch Who Stole Christmas Mr. Grinch, you and me both. This may very well be the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also the nosiest. All is not calm, asRead the whole post >>

Rockabye Baby

Tonight I was a rebel. I broke the parenting rule that says you should never rock your baby to sleep if you ever want her to learn to fall asleep on her own. Actually, this wasn’t my first offense, and it won’t be the last time either. But whatever. After I nursed M.E., she wasRead the whole post >>

Taking the Good with the Bad

Today is St. Francis of Assisi’s Feast Day, so it seems fitting that I share some thoughts on this humble servant of the Lord whose likeness adorns many outdoor gardens and natural sanctuaries. St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology, tops my list of favorite saints. When I was in theRead the whole post >>

Interruptions and Intentions

“Try interrupting the meditations of someone who is very attached to her spiritual exercises and you will see her upset, flustered, taken aback. A person who has true freedom will leave her prayer, unruffled, gracious toward the person who has unexpectedly disturbed her, for to here it’s all the same – serving God by meditatingRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.

“She could never be a saint, but she thought she could be a martyr if they killed her quick.”

―Flannery O'Connor
