A New Kind of Celebrity Worship

Recently, I decided to take this little personality quiz I discovered on Danielle Bean’s website. I took the quiz once, saw my personality summed up in a few paragraphs and felt confused. No, that couldn’t be right. (Even though the summary described me to a tee.) So I took it again. And again. I keptRead the whole post >>

Jesus is Risen! Alleluia!

Help me to fully embrace Jesus’ victory over death and the joy of the Easter season. Help me to take hold of the grace that is flowing down from heaven. Help me to spread the Good News through my words, my action, and my vocation as a Christian mother and wife. Help me to feastRead the whole post >>

Good Friday Reflection

[Image Credit: Two Hearts Design] Dear Mary, How did you do it? How did you stand at the foot of the cross and watch your son suffer? I wince when my children receive shots at the doctor’s office. I remember watching Madeline stand outside a circle of children playing and look at her peers longingly.Read the whole post >>

Perfect Schmerfect

When I was around 3, I fell and cut my mouth while playing in the backyard. I ran screaming to my mom with blood dribbling down my chin and onto my summer dress. My mom assumed my tears were the product of my pain and immediately started to comfort me. “Does it hurt?” she asked.Read the whole post >>

Nursing Mom’s-Eye View

To Nurse a Child, from my favorite book of mothers’ prayers – Mothers’ Manual by A. Francis Coomes, S.J. Holy Mary, you remember devoutly how as a young mother you pressed the divine Jesus tenderly to your breast. You were not then denied that precious privilege of motherhood, to nourish life you had brought intoRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
