The Attachment Parenting Debate

There has been a friendly debate going on between Danielle Bean, one of my favorite Catholic mom bloggers/writers, and Dr. Greg Popcak, a pro-attachment parenting (AP) expert I respect, and I’ve decided to weigh in. You can read the running commentary/debate at both Danielle’s site and at Heart, Mind & Strength. Although I am aRead the whole post >>

Before I Became a Mom…

I never would have included “take a shower” on my to-do list.

Build Me Up, Buttercup

Kids are honest – sometimes brutally honest, as Madeline and my bedtime conversation illustrates. Me:Come closer. I want to cuddle with you. Madeline rolls closer to me. I gently cup her face in my hands and plant a soft kiss on her lips. Madeline (AKA Buttercup): Ugh. “Peas” don’t kiss me, Mommy. You have badRead the whole post >>

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Here’s a look at Madeline and my breakfast conversation this morning (if you were expecting some deep, thought-provoking treatise on the past, present and future, sorry to disappoint you): Madeline: Daddy, coming home today? Me: Yes. He’ll be home soon, but he’ll need to sleep after working all night. Madeline: It’s tomorrow? Me: No, it’sRead the whole post >>

Bundle of Joy

I can fully appreciate now why people refer to babies as bundles of joy. Rachel Marie is filled with the stuff. I mean, the only thing she oozes out more than spit-up is pure, unadulterated joy. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
