Eau du Breastmilk

I’m wearing a new perfume. The scent embodies the creamy and refreshing allure of milk and leaves you with a lingering sense of femininity. After all, nothing quite says “woman” or at least “mom” like regurgitated breastmilk. Yes, today Madeline sniffed my arm, crinkled her nose and said, “Mommy, you smell like Baby Rachel.” AsRead the whole post >>

I’m a Big Sister

Today as we were leaving Nana and Pop’s house (we stopped by to cheer up Nana, who dislocated her shoulder on Saturday and is stuck in a sling), Pop waved to Madeline and said, “See you later, Alligator.” “I’m not an alligator,” she replied with a furrowed brow. “I’m a big sister.” Clearly, Madeline takesRead the whole post >>

Nursing Champ

The next time I feel like a nonstop milk machine I just need to take a look at this picture of a fellow devoted, nursing mother. Madeline decided this stuffed pup was a mommy and that various toys, including a plastic, wiry bunny, were hungry and needed some “boob milk,” as she calls it. TheRead the whole post >>

Babies Don’t Keep

Today Madeline was coloring when out of the blue she said, “Oh my gosh! I’m getting so big.” It’s true. I sometimes can’t believe how old she suddenly seems. She’s become quite the conversationalist and she’s started dressing herself (or at least attempting to), and she’s morphed into a little mother, who runs to herRead the whole post >>

From the Mouths of Babes

Oh, the things 33-month-olds say… Like when you’re trying to sneak in a few minutes, even seconds, of sleep while they play quietly in their bedroom and your baby is snoozing in the swing and they say every five minutes in a loud whisper, “‘Scuse’ me, Mommy. Is ‘dis’ too loud?” referring to the Mrs.Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
