A Good Excuse

The topic of extended breastfeeding (that is breastfeeding beyond one year) recently came up during a conversation with another mom. She asked me if I was getting tired of nursing my almost 14-month-old so much. “Not at all,” I told her. “It’s the only quiet time I have during the day.”I’m one of those momsRead the whole post >>

Celebrate the Small Stuff

I’ve been MIA in the “Small Successes” world. Why? Because I haven’t felt one bit successful. On one hand, I’ve still been trying to do too much. But my overly ambitious efforts and ideals often result in me doing too little. When a friend recently called to see how I was doing, I suffered fromRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
