Is Motherhood Worth It?

This photo was taken in healthier days. Has motherhood ever been featured on Dirty Jobs? If not, my 5-year-old would argue that it should be. Not that she’s ever seen the show, but she has had an up close and personal look at her mom’s dirty work. We all recently succumbed to a stomach bug,Read the whole post >>

Parenting by the Book – Part II

Part I, in which I ramble on and on about how you should always trust your own parental instincts over the experts, can be found here. This is Part II where I share some of my favorite parenting/family resources. This list includes books and resources that I: A) Just enjoyed reading. Serving v. Judging

It’s funny how so often a theme pops up in my life that just won’t go away. Since writing this, I’ve stumbled across various quotes related to being a true disciple of Christ, about how it has less to do with judging and more to do with loving. There have been emails, too, from readersRead the whole post >>

Parenting By the Book – Part I

I recently had a childless friend ask me for a list of my favorite parenting books with the upfront disclosure that she was only curious about my perspective and was not pregnant. This same friend wanted to watch Ricki Lake’s The Business of Being Born  with me. She says she finds the world of parentingRead the whole post >>

Let the Little Children Come

After this post, I had a friend ask me if I could compile all the links to articles I’ve written about bringing young children to Mass. She knows someone who is struggling with  bringing her toddler to church and wanted to offer some encouragement, so I’ve included a list of articles related to this subjectRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
