In God We Trust

Life has been throwing a lot of wrenches my way lately. Some of them have been big. Others have been small. The size doesn’t really matter. Nor do the details of how some of my plans and my ideas for what is good and right have been derailed. What matters is how I handle theseRead the whole post >>

Word to the Wise: On Faith

“Nonbelievers and those struggling with doubt have been heard to ask, ‘If God exists, why doesn’t God make that fact obvious?’ This statement from Jesus [‘Daughter, your faith has saved you.’ Mark 5:34] may hint at part of the answer. Perhaps there is something profoundly important in faith itself, separate from God’s other gifts. PerhapsRead the whole post >>

Pumping Up My Soul

Over at In God’s Image, I write about how I’m going to focus on nourishing a healthy soul instead of joining the throngs of people who add things like “lose five pounds” or “train for a 5K” to their list of New Year’s resolutions. Sure, I plan on sticking to my healthy lifestyle (and stillRead the whole post >>

Some Others’ Post-Election Thoughts

I’m still recovering from a pesky stomach bug and just can’t seem to string any coherent thoughts together after last night’s election results. What I will say is whether you’re happy with the results or not, Senator Obama is now our president and he deserves our respect and demands our prayers (as do all theRead the whole post >>

It is Finished

After a four hour wait (yes, four hours!), I cast my vote during Georgia’s advanced voting today. While waiting in the interminable line, I read a book, briefly chatted with my mom, and I prayed. I hadn’t planned on praying, but I finished my book, and a long wait was still ahead of me. IRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
