Words Whispered in a Mother’s Hurting Heart

I don’t know how she does it. An aunt of mine has had to watch her oldest daughter suffer and suffer over and over again. My cousin Michelle has cystic fibrosis and lissencephaly, a rare brain formation disorder. She’s in the hospital now after major surgery, and my aunt is aching to never leave herRead the whole post >>

Intermission

Only Good Movies recently interviewed my little brother (who is almost 30 now but will always be my little brother) about his favorite flicks. Josh is a movie junkie; the only thing he’s more obsessed about is sports. We used to call him Josh Buster because he had so many movies you could just “rent”Read the whole post >>

Prayers for a Modern Prodigal Son

There is not time for a long back story right now, but I have a brother who is on his way Home and could use some support on his journey. Jason, my older brother, grappled with a drug addiction (pain pills, etc.) for many years. This was my family’s secret. Growing up, my friends thoughtRead the whole post >>

This is What Hope Looks Like

And most of all, it looks like this: His name is Thomas (he’s the one with the white t-shirt thrown over his shoulder), but he often answers to T-Dog. Guest Blogger: Mom/Gaba on Recovery

Bed rest with grandkids My mom’s spirit is strong and her body’s getting there. Here she shares some of her thoughts as she recovers: I’m two-and-one-half weeks post-op with a six to nine month journey ahead of me. As I try to type this on my new iPhone, thanks to my hubby’s generosity and myRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
