Through a (New) 7-Year-Old’s Eyes

Madeline received a camera for her birthday. She’s been clicking away ever since. We recently downloaded her first batch of photos. I loved what I saw. I love what she sees: Herself, up close and personal Baby brother’s smiles

Nature Study at Nana & Pop’s

Observe the lizard perched on Pop’s head. I just love Mary Elizabeth’s expression here. — *This is just a reminder that there’s still time to enter to win a copy of A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms: 52 Companions for Your Heart, Mind, Body, and Soul or Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body. Alter Egos

We had quite the motley crew tonight: An elephant… A flamingo princess… (The princess part was essential to the costume. When people asked if she was a flamingo, Rae said, “No. A flamingo princess.”) Pippi… And a very cuddly teddy bear… Tonight was fun. Now the kids are all passed out with sugar comas. One Big, Happy Family

Welcome to the Body of Christ, Thomas Kemp! (I did not make that cake. It was almost too pretty to eat!) My sweet boy, my heart, may your baptism be the beginning of a beautiful journey of faith. A glorious hope was written on your heart today; the mystery of Christ, a precious gift andRead the whole post >>

I Am Mom. Hear Me Laugh. (And Belt Out Elvis Tunes.)

I have two upcoming speaking engagements next week that I need to prepare for (lucky Thomas gets to tag along), so this will be the last post for a week or so. I hope it leaves you smiling and ready to get your laughter on with your children. I’ll be back in a few! (ARead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
