From Fearful to Wistful

Good news: My husband has been snuggling with our sweet baby the past several nights, and I’ve actually gotten more than four hours of sleep in a row! Woo-hoo! Mary Elizabeth has finally hit the “slept through the night” milestone. (I refuse to consider how our upcoming move will likely lead to sleep regression.) SomeRead the whole post >>

Won’t You Join Me in Celebrating New Life?

Remember the ache in this mom’s heart when she lost her first baby in the ninth month of pregnancy? Well, yesterday the voids in my dear friend and her husband’s arms and heart were filled completely when they welcomed a healthy baby boy. Thanks be to God! Every baby is a miracle but as IRead the whole post >>

Muddy Memories

There has to be an award for moms who invite their children to frolic in a mud pit left behind from an early evening thunderstorm. This same mom never complains about washing muddy bodies coated with blades of grass or stained clothing. (Extra points for that.) Then again, maybe the reward is the joy thatRead the whole post >>

Joy Observed

A drooling baby walking toward me with outstretched arms, giggling with each wobbly step. Little girls painting outside, the sun shining down on them and their creation, a muddy cloud of colors. Signs of Spring

Big sisters in sundresses pushing little sisters in strollers Little girls on swings Naked piggies Turtles sunning on logs Canadian geese returning to the pond   Flowers blooming Just when you think the cold, long days are interminable, it happens: The last sigh of winter, and the air becomes warmer. A gentle breeze replaces theRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
