When you don’t have to choose your Lenten sacrifice

I know everyone, or at least a lot of my most loyal remnant who have managed to stick around to read my sporadic ramblings here on this sorely-neglected blog, are probably sick of my whining about my running injury, but I need some catharsis today. Feel free to click away from here if you’re overRead the whole post >>

A Good Friday Reflection

This hasn’t been the greatest Lent. That’s an understatement, actually.  In all honesty, I feel like an epic failure. I set the bar low, and I still couldn’t meet any of my spiritual goals. Yet in spite of me and my failings, Easter will come. In the face of my sins and my foibles, thereRead the whole post >>

A Lovely Lenten Lunch

Yesterday we decided to take school and lunch outside. It was a quintessential spring day here. We sat under the canopy of a big and very old dogwood tree. White petals from the blossoms swirled in the breeze. Mary Elizabeth, who is incapable of sitting long enough to ever finish an entire meal even aRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes: The Leaving on a Jet Plane Edition

— 1 — Things have been quiet around here. Let me take that back. Things have been quiet around my blog, but it’s been quite the opposite in my house. Living Lent

I’m praying for a fruitful Lent for all of you. I’m hoping to live Lent this year. I need this season right about now. Ever since my fourth baby was born, my prayer life has been hit or miss (and mostly miss, if I’m honest). It’s time to get back on track. I’m also hopingRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
