My “Rae” of Sunshine

Dear Rae-Rae, We were at the beach recently padding along on the soft sand when I noticed you ambling slowly along beside me. Your dark brown eyes sparkled like the sun shimmering on the sea. Golden wisps of your sunshine-kissed hair had escaped your ponytail and were delicately framing your face. Everything about you atRead the whole post >>

Still Crazy After All These Years

…but not in Paul Simon’s wistful, lovesick kind of way. I’m still crazy about you after all these years as I was when we were dating and staying up way, way, way past my bedtime talking on the phone for hours and hours. (What did we talk about?) Love is the law of your life. ThisRead the whole post >>

To My Baby Brother on the Eve of His Wedding Day

Dear Josh, I know you’re 30, but I’m always going to think of you as my baby brother – the little boy with sandy blond hair whom I coerced into playing school, the friend I later confided in when I was in the midst of another big drama in my life. Remember when we playedRead the whole post >>

Meet Happiness Herself

Dear Mary Elizabeth, Happy birthday! Two years old – wow! Two years old and your constant curiosity has not resulted in too many casualties besides a busted lip, a bruise here and there, and a broken leg – wow-wow-wow! Here’s a much-deserved hat tip to your very busy guardian angel. My adventurous, sweet Mary Elizabeth,Read the whole post >>

12 Week Portrait

Dear Baby, I’ve never had so many sneak peaks into my womb as I have with this pregnancy. Today I caught my third glimpse of you. Boy, were you moving around a lot. You’re practicing your karate kicks. My midwife joked and said we either have a football punter or ballerina on our hands. TheRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
