Happy Birthday, Rachel Marie!

Happy Birthday to my Baby Rae, a lover of: Going “night-night.” Yes, you actually ask to go to sleep. I hit the mom jackpot with you. Showing off and saying words like “Japanese,” “guacamole,” and “porcupine.” You’re our little chatterbox. Anything your big sister Madeline loves or likes to do. Letter to My Unborn Baby

Preface: I write a journal for each of my children during my pregnancies. I plan on passing these journals along to my children when they’re first expecting their own baby or perhaps to commemorate some other milestone in life. My first child’s journal includes long-winded accounts of my day, my dreams for her, details ofRead the whole post >>

Happy Baptismal Day, Madeline!

Four years ago we welcomed you into the Body of the Christ. You were exactly two months old, and you remained wide awake for the entire service (not really a big surprise since you never snoozed much even in those early days). I held you close in your beautiful gown fashioned from your gaba’s weddingRead the whole post >>

Four Years Ago…

Four years ago I thought I was fully prepared for labor, birth, motherhood, the whole shebang after working at a regional parenting publication, being a star student in my Bradley birthing class, quizzing other moms for parenting wisdom, and reading countless books about baby care and raising kids the right way. Birthday Letter to Mom

Dear Mom, A mother’s love. Before I became a mom, I mistakenly assumed I knew how much you loved me. After all, I was always aware of your love whenever I’d discover surprise “love notes” tucked in my lunchbox along with my all-time favorite sandwich with the perfect proportion of honey and PB spread smoothlyRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I'm the author of two nonfiction books Getting Past Perfect and Weightless, a storyteller*, overthinker, eating disorder survivor, mom of five, book junkie, socially awkward nerd as well as a speaker (so basically a walking and talking contradiction), and a perfectionist in recovery.

I am currently working towards my MFA in Fiction at Warren Wilson. Thank you to everyone who has read my drafts, offered feedback, and cheered me on. The writing life is often solitary, but I wouldn’t be here without a community of support.
