To My Big Girl

Dear Madeline, I’ve been writing birthday letters to you and your sisters every year, and you’d think these sentimental snippets would get easier as you grew and started doing more interesting stuff than just babbling, toddling about, and excreting, but it’s tough to sum up what you mean to me as you grow older, biggerRead the whole post >>

Birthday Girl

Dear Rae-Rae, First a story: We went to Minnesota in April for my cousin’s wedding. Following the ceremony, there was a long cocktail hour before the reception began. Adults were milling around, talking about boring adult things. We found a table and there you sat comfortably on Gaba’s lap, still and quiet. I offered youRead the whole post >>

A First Birthday Letter to my Baby Girl

The birthday girl Dear Mary Elizabeth (also known as M.E.),                                  April 5, 2010 This past weekend we celebrated the new life that is you.  Just one year ago I was walking alongside your daddy on a beautiful spring day. It was Palm Sunday, and it seemed fitting that I was in a passion of myRead the whole post >>

Happy Birthday, Sweet Madeline!

Dear Madeline, You had your last soccer game this past weekend. Like always, you gave it your all and sprinted across the field with your tongue dangling from your mouth. Your face was flushed with heat (it was unseasonably warm even for Georgia) as well as happiness. Following the game, your coach handed out medalsRead the whole post >>

Letter to a Second Child

From the 2007 archives (because life and germs happen; perhaps one day soon I’ll write a letter such as this to my third child): Dear Rachel Marie, On Friday night, we were alone – a rare occurrence for the two of us (aside from middle-of-the-night feedings). Your daddy had to work late and your bigRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
