A Birthday Letter to My Baby Brother

Dear Josh, Happy Birthday! You must be feeling really old now that you have a mortgage to pay. Congrats on the new home! You know, I realized I haven’t really written you one of my signature, sappy letters since your college graduation. How pitiful is that. So I decided to stop being such a slackerRead the whole post >>

Hers: This fish sure has lived a long time.Mine: Uh. Yeah, it’s been like 16 hours since we welcomed it into our family.Hers (showing me a wilted weed): Look at this flower. Isn’t it beautiful? Mine: Well, it’s not a rose, but… Hers (as she throws open the curtains in our dining area): See! Oh,Read the whole post >>

You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby!

Happy birthday, Baby Rae! When you were born, I decided I would sing “You Are My Sunshine” to you each night. (Madeline has her own special song that I sing to her at bedtime as well.) Little did I know that you would embrace this as your theme song. You truly are our little “Rae”Read the whole post >>

Good Friday Reflection

[Image Credit: Two Hearts Design] Dear Mary, How did you do it? How did you stand at the foot of the cross and watch your son suffer? I wince when my children receive shots at the doctor’s office. I remember watching Madeline stand outside a circle of children playing and look at her peers longingly.Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
