How to help sparkly child shine without them driving you to the brink of insanity

Sometimes I’ll look around a public place like a grocery store or an airport and I’ll see all these docile children, offering their sibling the last cookie in their snack bag or saying, “Yes, Mommy” when she asks them to hand over her iPhone where the child was quietly practicing her phonics. Meanwhile this isRead the whole post >>

You will never be this loved

This has been a good week. Busy, yes, but good. My schedule was comfortably full; I was able to get things accomplished without feeling like it was all too much. Of course, there are many days when I feel overextended and over-leveraged. There are moments when everyone needs my woman-power. Littles physically cling to meRead the whole post >>

Be Jesus’ Skin

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta said, “I am God’s pencil, a tiny bit of pencil with which He writes what He likes.” We are all God’s pencils no matter how He chooses to use our gifts and our lives to carry out His will. There have been too many times in my life when I haveRead the whole post >>

A place to sit and rest and remember

My husband was finally able to get in contact with the appropriate people, and we got permission to take one of our neighbor’s old chairs. The Empty Chairs

When we first moved into our home a little less than two years ago, I wasn’t too fond of our neighbor’s plastic chairs. Sounds superficial, I know, but this was my husband and my first home, and I wanted everything to be perfect. The chairs were positioned right next to our driveway on a patchRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
