This & That

I received my December issue of Cooking Light, and there was a great article about eating mindfully. Like I discussed in this anti-dieting post, the article encouraged readers to think in terms of choosing to do something or choosing not to do something rather than telling yourself, “I should eat this,” or “I shouldn’t eatRead the whole post >>

An Interview with Lisa Hendey

I’ve been privileged to know Lisa Hendey for several years now. I consider her not only a strong, faithful voice in Catholic media, but also a professional and personal mentor. Despite her many accomplishments what always shines through and impresses me the most is her humility. She never stops thanking others and shifting the praiseRead the whole post >>

Don’t Leave Home Without This

As a busy and sometimes frazzled mom of littles, I may desire long blocks of time devoted to contemplative prayer, but life as it is right now is messy, noisy, and full of interruptions. Book Review: Happy Catholic – Glimpses of God in Everyday Life

I’ve long been a quote junkie, collecting the verbal fragments of others like someone else might accrue baseball cards or stamps. I have to be one of the rare teenagers who asked her parents for  a copy of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations for Christmas. So it’s no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed Julie Davis’s Happy CatholicRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.

“She could never be a saint, but she thought she could be a martyr if they killed her quick.”
