My Brain is Still Here; It’s Just a Little Slow

Last night I fell asleep putting my Rachel to sleep at about 8 pm. I didn’t wake up again until around 10ish when Thomas needed to nurse. I promptly fell asleep next to him. After a later noshing session (around 2:30 a.m.), I found myself wide awake. A random ticker tape of thoughts traveled throughRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes: The “Mommy has a crush on Jesus” and More Edition

— 1 — Thomas, who is just shy of five months, has made his modeling debut. — 2 — 7-year-old: Do you have a crush on anyone, Mommy? Me: Yup. 7-year-old: I think I know who. Me: Who do you think? 7-year-old: Jesus! 4-year-old: Yeah. It’s definitely Jesus. I actually had their daddy in mind,Read the whole post >>

Waiting for my miracle

Tonight I was curled up next to my 4-year-old, my eyes half-mast. “I’m so tired. I just may fall asleep right here beside you.” “And stay here all night?” she asked hopefully. It’s been an adjustment for my two younger daughters to not be able to sleep with me now that I have to night-nurtureRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes: The Laughing Matters, Star Wars, Homeschooling Discernment, & More Edition

— 1 — One of my most essential survival tactics in the trenches of motherhood is keeping a sense of humor. I have a post entitled “Laughing Matters” over at What to Expect where I share a true-life story of how I ended up laughing when I probably should have been sniveling. Here’s a snippet:Read the whole post >>

The Sole Purpose of this Post is to Make You Feel Better About Yourself

Way, way at the bottom of this post I alluded to the fact that sleep-deprivation is taking its toll on my cerebral capacity. Sometimes I feel like I’m losing my mind. Case in point: Instead of ordering one $50 gift card to thank my daughter’s coaches for a fun season, I ordered 50 gift cardsRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
