Notes from the Trenches

My babymoon is going so well. I’m tired, but I’ve just felt really happy and content this postpartum period. I’ve also really made peace with the fact that I just don’t have time to piece together perfect prose (or much prose at all) these days. I love this blog and writing, but they’re definitely notRead the whole post >>

The Right Choice

I have a choice right now. A babysitter is here playing with the older children. The baby’s tummy is full, and he is content. I have loads of laundry I should be doing. We have company coming this weekend, and the floor is littered with crumbs, the counters caked with stickiness. There’s plenty of cleaningRead the whole post >>

This is exactly how I feel

A lot like this: And this: And this, too: Only Madeline (AKA Hopping Cricket) seems to be moving full-speed ahead these days. The rest of us are tired, tired, tired. I wish I could nap on the go. Sleep when the baby sleeps? Ha! Try doing that at the start of soccer season and whenRead the whole post >>

Love Grows, But What About the Bed?

When I was pregnant with my second, I remember worrying and wondering how in the world I could possibly love another child as much as I loved my first. Of course, I quickly learned that there’s plenty of love to go around. Love doesn’t diminish when we welcome more children into our lives. It multiplies;Read the whole post >>

The Single Best Thing I’ve Done Lately to Be a Better Wife and Mom

For the past few weeks I’ve been doing something radical. Almost every night after the girls’ story time, bedtime prayers, and tuck-in time, instead of resting beside them for a few minutes before popping up to conquer the world (one dirty sock at a time) I’ve instead slipped into their warm nest of covers, and I’veRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
