Comparing Our Crosses

A few years ago my mom said something I’ve never forgotten. When I was in the thick of treatment for my eating disorder, she was shouldering her own share of burdens – ones that were completely out of her control. Out of the blue one day, I burst into tears and said something like, “WhyRead the whole post >>

Huh?

I was just perusing my Sitemeter statistics because the kids and Daddy are asleep already (Dad’s working nights and has to go into the hospital in a couple of hours) and saw an odd and wee bit disturbing referral for my blog. Please someone help explain to me why when a person Googles “lick myRead the whole post >>

Seven Quick Takes

I can’t resist. I’m jumping on Jen’s “7 Quick Takes” bandwagon at least for this Friday. I used to try to write at least one somewhat cerebral post a week, but it’s just not happening right now. (See take numero dos and you’ll see that two little ones are quite possible sucking the brain cellsRead the whole post >>

My Stealth Sleep Strategies

Once upon a time there lived a woman who could care less about balls, evil stepmothers, three bears or seven dwarfs. All she really wanted was sleep. In fact, she didn’t think Sleeping Beauty had it so bad. If her own prince (AKA husband of six-and-a-half years) woke her up with a sweet kiss afterRead the whole post >>

You Know You’re an Old Married Fart with Little Kids and a Husband on Call When…

You read in bed alone until 11 PM and then decide ringing in the New Year really isn’t worth staying up another hour and you turn out the lights and fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow. (Yes, I’m back in Blogville after a lovely, little hiatus.)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
