Mirror Image

My 14-month-old loves to kiss her image staring back at her in my bedroom’s full-length mirror. I watched her the other day smiling and waving at herself and then leaning in for a wet kiss, and I found myself wondering if I’ve ever felt like kissing the reflection that stares back at me when IRead the whole post >>

Life as a Classroom

I once had a friend lament over how she hasn’t signed her 6-month-old up for any baby “classes” yet. “Are you wanting to get out more?” I asked her. “No. I’m fine, but she seems bored. I think she needs more stimulation.” My friend is a product of modern parenting and the school of thoughtRead the whole post >>

Busy Work

Hmmmm…How does this work? Some homeschooling moms invest in expensive manipulatives to keep their preschooler’s hands busy. I prefer to begin early training for motherhood by handing my child a bag full of old breast pump parts. (My lactation consultant/mother-in-law would be proud.)

Living a Mixed Marriage: Tip #2

Just in case you haven’t been following this series, you can read about my own mixed marriage here. Last week I discussed using what I refer to as “stealth evangelizing” to witness to your spouse or anyone who may not share your faith tradition. Here’s this week’s tip: Don’t lose faith. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
