Of all things visible and invisible

This morning my sweet 2-year-old boy delicately cupped my chin in his dimpled hands, widened his bright, brown eyes, and said to me, “Do laundry. Make dinner.” I have to admit I was expecting him to profess his unfettered love to me, not give me a to-do list. I laughed at this unexpected moment butRead the whole post >>

Better late than never

I had every intention of being prompt and posting Halloween and All Saints’ Day photos at the start of the week. You’d think that now that I’ve been resigned to a mostly sedentary existence because of that darn hamstring injury I’d have more time to blog (or clean or learn to sew or do somethingRead the whole post >>

And the MRI says…

…stop running you fool. Here’s the good news. For those of you who could care one iota about running, I won’t be hitting the pavement for a long time, so I may not be blogging much about it either. Then again, I may need the catharsis because my dear husband encouraged me to get anRead the whole post >>

My first-world problems and me

I had a conversation with a fellow mom not too long ago that began with us joking about how it never fails that our sweet children mutate into screaming, clingy, little beasties the moment we pick up the phone. At first, this mom was laughing as she shared a recent anecdote about a child throwingRead the whole post >>

Race Recap: Athens Half

This isn’t going to be a lengthy recap or review of Sunday’s Half. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
