*Alternately titled: Free Therapy for Kate Wicker The dreaded running injury I went on and and on about here has turned out to not be quite as devastating as I thought. I have a tendency to ruminate and worry before I even know how badly things really are, and scouring online forums doesn’t help sinceRead the whole post >>

I get knocked down, but I get up again

I’ve written before about how seeing our bodies as instruments rather than objects goes a long way in boosting our body image. But what happens when despite our best efforts to take care of it, this instrument of ours doesn’t work properly? What then? I was supposed to run a 15K today. In two weeksRead the whole post >>

Hello. My name is Kate, and I am insecure. And probably so are you. Now what are we going to do about it?

Not too long ago I was reading The Phantom Tollbooth aloud to my two oldest children. Milo, the book’s hero of sorts, stumbles upon “the long-nosed, green-eyed, curly-haired, wide-mouthed, thick-necked, broad-shouldered, round-bodied, short-armed, bowlegged, or big-footed monster” who claims to be one of the most “frightening fiends in the great wild wilderness.” Milo, his faithfulRead the whole post >>

Why I might have chosen the child-free life

During a recent radio interview with EWTN’s Sonrise Morning Show, we discussed how body image plays a role in keeping women from embracing pregnancy and becoming mothers. Our culture definitely perpetuates the whole I-don’t-want-to-do-that-to-my-body – “that” being pregnancy, otherwise known as granting your stomach and bum their very own zip codes and saying sayonara toRead the whole post >>

Thank God for Momnesia

The other day I had fall fever. Since I only have two little ones at home now I decided to go out to lunch and then run a few errands, including stopping by the local bookstore. (My first mistake was assuming that not having the two older children who are actually mostly helpful these daysRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
