Notes from the Trenches

My babymoon is going so well. I’m tired, but I’ve just felt really happy and content this postpartum period. I’ve also really made peace with the fact that I just don’t have time to piece together perfect prose (or much prose at all) these days. I love this blog and writing, but they’re definitely notRead the whole post >>

Weighty Issues

Join the weighty conversation over at Crisis Magazine following my interview with Zoe Romanowsky. (Just don’t mind the embarrassingly large photo of me.) An excerpt: “I truly believe that women, in particular, suffer from poor body image as a result of a spiritual attack. It all started in the Garden of Eden, when Satan temptedRead the whole post >>

2 Quick Takes Because That’s About All I Can Handle Right About Now

~1~ Madeline, 6, keeps referring to Thomas’s penis as “The Defender.” The first time she referred to it as such, I asked her what she meant. “It’s his defender,” she explained. “He pees on you to defend against you changing his diaper.” Speaking of his penis, poor boy has caused quite a commotion in aRead the whole post >>

Dinner at Grandma’s

A guest post by none other than my own mom! — The smells – that’s what brings me back to the good old days of Sunday dinners at my grandma’s house – the smell of her china cabinet when opened to set the table, the smell of all of her culinary delights bubbling on theRead the whole post >>

The Right Choice

I have a choice right now. A babysitter is here playing with the older children. The baby’s tummy is full, and he is content. I have loads of laundry I should be doing. We have company coming this weekend, and the floor is littered with crumbs, the counters caked with stickiness. There’s plenty of cleaningRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I'm the author of two nonfiction books Getting Past Perfect and Weightless, a storyteller*, overthinker, eating disorder survivor, mom of five, book junkie, socially awkward nerd as well as a speaker (so basically a walking and talking contradiction), and a perfectionist in recovery.

I am currently working towards my MFA in Fiction at Warren Wilson. Thank you to everyone who has read my drafts, offered feedback, and cheered me on. The writing life is often solitary, but I wouldn’t be here without a community of support.
