Still Nesting

I’m not sure, but this may be the first time I have sat down other than to eat or to nurse Mary Elizabeth in the past three days. We don’t have Internet in our home yet so even if I hadn’t been unpacking box after box and sorting and resorting, I doubt I would haveRead the whole post >>

8 Ways to Be a Fit Mom

I’m over at Faith & Family LIVE today sharing tips on how to be a fit mom. You’ll have to forgive another mention of my long-distance running days. I didn’t realize both running-related references would appear in the same week, but clearly I’m pining for those long runs and feel like I have to remindRead the whole post >>

From Fearful to Wistful

Good news: My husband has been snuggling with our sweet baby the past several nights, and I’ve actually gotten more than four hours of sleep in a row! Woo-hoo! Mary Elizabeth has finally hit the “slept through the night” milestone. (I refuse to consider how our upcoming move will likely lead to sleep regression.) SomeRead the whole post >>

All or Nothing

Preface: I’ll be getting off this technology kick soon (promise!), but I wanted to share just a few more thoughts on the topic before I get back to writing about more interesting stuff – you know, like my kids’ bowel movements. I bet you can’t wait. For nearly a year now, I’ve been asking theRead the whole post >>

Fairy Dust

Madeline gave a whole new meaning to the term “fairy dust” when she recently told me this: “I have a feeling that fairies are real. You know when you see that stuff floating in the air by a window? You might think it’s dust, but it’s really fairies flying around.” Only a child would findRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
