OT

The girls – all three of them (or so I thought) – were upstairs playing in a safe (or so I thought), designated kids’ area. I was downstairs searching for a blasted username for an online bill payment service and also trying to register for one of those perks programs for our local office supplyRead the whole post >>

Gross Anatomy

So I’m tossing some kidney beans into the turkey gumbo I’m making for dinner the other night when my 3-year-old Rachel asks, “What are those?” “Kidney beans,” I reply. “When I had my urinary tract infection,” recalls 5-year-old Madeline, “I had to get an ultrasound so they could check out my kidney beans to makeRead the whole post >>

A Therapeutic Rant

I’m still working on organizing my photos and thoughts from my trip last week. Stay tuned…  I’m also still trying to catch up on laundry. One week of it piling up has left me buried beneath an overwhelming mound. (The kids love it – what fun to hide in all the dirty socks and underwear!)Read the whole post >>

Creating, Living, Breathing, Pausing

Where have I been? Why the silence? Why the sole blinking cursor that never turns into letters or words?  First, we were busy creating (hence, the blog post below). My hands all dirty with paint and pastel chalk dust steered clear of the pristine (sterile, lifeless) keyboard.  More recently, we found ourselves in rural MaineRead the whole post >>

A Necessary Curriculum Tweak

So we’re easing into our homeschool routine. Recently, in the midst of digging deep into archeology, my 3-year-old daughter abruptly said, “P.U. Who pooted?” (My apologies for this potty talk to all my lovely Southern Belle friends.) “I didn’t,” said her big sister. “Did you Mommy?” asked the 3-year-old. “No. I would have said, ‘ExcuseRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
