Out of the mouths of my babes (Vol. 1)

6-year-old Rachel as I was attempting to use the bathroom with an entourage in my midst: “I just realized something. Mommy never gets any alone time. I remember when I started school, and it was quiet and no one was talking, and I thought, ‘This is nice.’ I’d never had that before. Mommy, you stillRead the whole post >>

It’s not easy being 2…

…as evidenced by the following series of photos. I had told Thomas he could help open my birthday presents (I am getting old and am okay with it). Everything was all hunky dory until Mary Elizabeth wanted to help, too. He’s not too into this whole sharing thing. Thomas’s face is priceless, and so areRead the whole post >>

Double the fun

Dear Thomas, Happy (belated) 2nd birthday to my amazing, little boy! I can’t believe it’s been two years since Daddy first announced, “It’s a boy!” And, I still convinced I was having another girl and all euphoric with those happy-wow-my-body-just-brought-forth-another-little-human-being-into-the-world-my-how-I-rock endorphins, said, “Oh, she’s so beautiful!” “Um, that’s not a girl,” Daddy promptly corrected me.Read the whole post >>

About that cliff hanger

Okay. So I never should have pulled the old cliff hanger trick in my last post. Honestly, I meant to follow up on that post long before now, but two trips in less than three weeks as well as a broken bone have left me running around more than usual all while toting around anRead the whole post >>

I hope your day started out less messy than mine did

If you leave a toddler with a spinach-very-berry smoothie for 2.2 seconds, it not only poses a potential choking hazard (never leave a child unattended while eating or slurping). But it just may also leave you at risk of having a mom meltdown when you discover your kitchen looks like a scene from a veryRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
