A Child’s Growth Does Not Always Glitter Like Gold

Here’s some wisdom I’m keeping close as I embark on my new life living with four kids under 6. The passages are excerpted from The Child Under Six by James L. Hymes, which my wonderful mom-in-law gave me. The book remains one of my all-time favorite parenting books, but it’s sadly out of print. “TheRead the whole post >>

Breastfeeding & Calling a Truce in the Mommy Wars

Today I want to talk about why it’s time we all call a truce in the mommy wars by focusing first on breastfeeding. This isn’t a “how-to-have-a-happy-nursing-relationship-post” or an “I’m-a-lactivist-and-here’s-why-treatise.” On the contrary, I want to make all moms feel comfortable around here – even those who for whatever reason were unable to or choseRead the whole post >>

Big Day, Big Thoughts

Today is a big day for our family. My mama arrived at Emory at 5 a.m. this morning for an angiogram and then will have a procedure that will hopefully successfully treat at least one of her brain aneurysms. My dad gave us an update and there’s another procedure before hers, so we won’t knowRead the whole post >>

A Bed Rest Survival Guide (Unabridged)

I’m becoming a bed rest pro. Three out of four of my pregnancies have now resulted in some form of mandated “taking it easy.” Now before I write anything further, I have to be clear that I’ve never had to endure the strictest form of bed rest when you end up in the supine positionRead the whole post >>

Guest Blogging Over at Conversion Diary

Today I’m over at Jen’s spot – yes, the Jennifer Fulwiler, uber blogger and founder of Conversion Diary. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share my thoughts on the word “daily” in the Our Father. (Thanks for having me, Jen!) Incredibly, I somehow managed to marble poop into a post about grace, prayer, andRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
