Homemade Pretzels

We recently made our first batch of homemade pretzels. I used this recipe, but I substituted one cup of whole wheat flour. The dough was a bit salty for my liking, so I may try an alternate recipe next year. However, overall I was pleased with the activity and so were the girls. Before weRead the whole post >>

Lenten Progress Report

My progress report? The good news first because I choose to be a half-full kind of person: I’ve taken baby steps in the right direction. Now for the not-so-good news (I won’t say bad): I’ve been falling on my bum a lot this Lent.  One step forward, two steps back. Or something like that. Failure stinks, especiallyRead the whole post >>

At the Heart of it All

The girls (mostly Madeline, my five-year-old) came up with their very own Lenten plan, and it’s been going well. We’ve talked about how the goal of Lent is to become more like Jesus. Then I asked her how she thought she might be able to do that. She shared her ideas, and I wrote themRead the whole post >>

Lent for Little Ones

My oldest daughter is only five, so I don’t expect her to draw up a long list of sacrifices. Here are a few ways I make this liturgical season come alive for my littleRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
