{this moment} – A Friday [or Thursday if you’re so mixed up you schedule a post for a day that you think is Friday in your grey sludge of a brain] ritual. A single photo – no words – capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want toRead the whole post >>

Katie & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day That Ended Not So Badly After All

There’s a Palomino rocking horse on my front porch. He’s been stripped of his saddle, and some of his coat is a bit on the crusty side. He’s airing out after a toddler decided to straddle him in a very poopy diaper that proceeded to leak all over the once noble steed. I was downstairsRead the whole post >>

New Life In Him

Despite broken bones, puffy eyes, and toddlers who are suddenly boycotting their naps, I’m on an Easter kick. We all should be. We are an Easter people. Besides, joy feels good. During my most recent spiritual direction session I was sharing how it’s not easy to dredge up dark bits from my past. My spiritualRead the whole post >>

Fifty Days of Feasting

Easter blessings to you all. Alleluia! I hope to share more thoughts on my Holy Week and Easter weekend, but a nasty cold and the nearly constant ministration to a sick toddler who only wants mama has left me feeling like a Mack truck rolled right over me.  Truthfully, I haven’t been in the bestRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
