No Bathing Reprieve for a New Mommy

Confession: Recently, I haven’t been taking daily showers. I’m on the every-other-day schedule and fine with it. My hair actually looks better when I don’t wash it every day, thank you very much. But apparently my toddler’s not so sure about my new grooming routine. The other day she took a big whiff of myRead the whole post >>

Small Successes 12

1. We had our baby!!! 2. My older daughters are just tickled pink with their baby sister (nearly literally since X chromosomes are winning out around here) and are proving to be perfect, little mothers-in-training. 3. My milk came in on Tuesday, and Mary Elizabeth is an adept milk monger. Last night she had herRead the whole post >>

Gabas Rule, Mommies Drool

During an intimate pre-bedtime exchange: Me: What’s one of your favorite memories so far?Preschooler: Playing in the lake with Gaba. Me: Do you have any bad memories?Preschooler: Hmmmm… When you got mad at me for drawing on your sheets and furniture. My Little Carnivore

I’m not sure I have to point out the irony of this post following my Meatless Monday series, but it has recently become very clear that my oldest daughter does not share my sentiments when it comes to red meat and when she turns 14 and is required to practice the laws of abstinence, FridaysRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
