2 Quick Takes Because That’s About All I Can Handle Right About Now

~1~ Madeline, 6, keeps referring to Thomas’s penis as “The Defender.” The first time she referred to it as such, I asked her what she meant. “It’s his defender,” she explained. “He pees on you to defend against you changing his diaper.” Speaking of his penis, poor boy has caused quite a commotion in aRead the whole post >>

All in the family

My oldest daughter is ready for some human cousins as evidenced by her recent observation: “You know, I really like kittens and puppies. I like dogs and cats,” Madeline said, “but it’s astonishing that all I have is furry cousins.” My sister-in-law and her husband have two wiry, little pups named Winston and Lelia, andRead the whole post >>

Randomness

I haven’t had the time or even really the desire to flesh out any great thoughts lately. So in a lieu of a more meaningful post, I’m just going to share some random glimpses into our life lately. I might start doing this more often, actually, even when it’s not 7 Quick Takes Friday. It’sRead the whole post >>

Thanks, but no thanks

After she was finished doing this: (4-year-old is biting her toenails in case the photo isn’t clear.) She very sweetly asked, “Want some?” Um, no thanks. (Photos such as this will be securely archived as they may be useful in scaring off future boyfriends*.) *My husband and I recently encouraged her to date her daddyRead the whole post >>

Love Grows, But What About the Bed?

When I was pregnant with my second, I remember worrying and wondering how in the world I could possibly love another child as much as I loved my first. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
