Mission Accomplished: Snowman, Crockpot Applesauce, & Hot Cocoa

The snow was too soft and fresh yesterday to build anything, but today it was perfect. We’ve never been able to create a snowman this big here in Georgia. Usually they are pitiful things that look more like the one pictured in this past post, so we’re very proud. As Daddy and the big girlsRead the whole post >>

Shell Angels and Poinsettia Princesses (And Cookies and Felt Bracelets, Too!)

Okay, so I’m really taking readers’ advice to heart and just covering the gamut of things – from eating disorder recovery to the futile search for a baby doll with special private parts (don’t ask). Today I’ve decided to share a triumphant moment for me in craft land! I love the idea of crafts, butRead the whole post >>

Advent Traditions: Preparing Our Hearts and Our Homes

‘Tis almost the season for  caroling, feasting, traveling, and of course, preparing our hearts and homes for Christ. (Advent begins in less than one week! Yes, I’m late in posting this, but we’ve had colds and plumbing disasters, and I was trying to get tons of Christmas stuff done ahead of time so Advent wouldRead the whole post >>

Argh! Pirate Birthday Party Fun

Last weekend we celebrated Madeline’s sixth birthday with friends and family. Sometime last year she became obsessed with pirates and the idea of searching for lost treasure. Spring Chickens & Guac

Don’t let the intriguing title of this post fool you. There’s nothing thrilling about the content. Just a craft idea and a recipe for some delicious guacamole. If you’re a somewhat regular reader of my blog, you’ve probably gathered that I am not nearly as artsy as virtually every other mom a lot of momsRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
