Triduum Daybook

Outside my window… Sunshine! Forecast calls for a high of 75. Nirvana. I’m listening to… Baby babbles. I’m pondering.. How do I find the balance between technology controlling me and it helping to make my life easier and more enriched? This Lent, I’ve discovered this is a difficult question to answer.  (More on this topic oneRead the whole post >>

Homemade Pretzels

We recently made our first batch of homemade pretzels. I used this recipe, but I substituted one cup of whole wheat flour. The dough was a bit salty for my liking, so I may try an alternate recipe next year. However, overall I was pleased with the activity and so were the girls. Before weRead the whole post >>

Birthday Daybook

I’ve really enjoyed reading Daybooks from bloggers like Elizabeth Foss and Sarah Reinhard over the past few months, so I’ve decided to start occasionally sharing my own Daybook. The Simple Woman’s Daybook idea began with Peggy in 2008. I’ve decided to adopt some of its headings, make up some of my own as well asRead the whole post >>

Hold the Beef: Going Meatless in Lent and Beyond

I’m back. Sort of. I’m still limiting my screen time, and I have much to say about my recent Internet fast (including how I learned the most from a moment of weakness). Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
