Book Review: Saints at the Dinner Table

I never expected to transform into a total foodie, but somehow it happened. My mom was an amazing housewife, but she’d be the first to admit that she was no Rachael Ray. Once when my younger brother returned home from college, he told her how much he’d missed her homecooking. “Well, what do you wantRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes (Vol. 2)

I’m baaaaccckkk! I had so much fun participating in Jen’s 7 Quick Takes last week that I’ve decided to throw some more random thoughts out there. #1 I visit Testosterhome on a fairly regular basis even though we have far more X chromosomes floating around our household. In fact, on Christmas we discovered after openingRead the whole post >>

Twenty-First Day of Advent

Buy the ingredients to make a birthday cake with your children for Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve. This is a tradition I’ve adopted from my husband’s family. His mom always whips together a moist and delicious plum cake (with the help of my oldest daughter, of course). It’s a light dessert to top off ChristmasRead the whole post >>

Rudolph, With Your Nose So Bright, Won’t You Help A Mommy’s Plight?

The answer is yes. My kids are both going through a picky stage. I suppose everything is relative because my 4-year-old did recently choose to eat a spinach salad topped with feta, black olives, cucumbers and Greek dressing instead of a greasy piece of pizza. (Lest you think she has no food vices, a chocolateRead the whole post >>

Thirteenth Day of Advent: Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Share the story of Saint Juan Diego with your kids, and discuss ways they can increase their faith and obedience. Then chow down on some Mexican food. Try some Sopa de espinaca con codito (Translation: spinach soup with macaroni). Coloring Page Credit: Artwork by Waltzing Matilda; coloring by Madeline

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
