Waiting for my miracle

Tonight I was curled up next to my 4-year-old, my eyes half-mast. “I’m so tired. I just may fall asleep right here beside you.” “And stay here all night?” she asked hopefully. It’s been an adjustment for my two younger daughters to not be able to sleep with me now that I have to night-nurtureRead the whole post >>

Weighing In

I’ll spare you yet another post related to making peace with your body and focus instead on my delectable dude who’s weighing in at just over 17 pounds at 4 1/2 months. He hasn’t missed too many meals, clearly. The girls told our pediatrician that he’s going to like jalapenos and Indian food because that’sRead the whole post >>

What Lies Ahead

Yesterday I turned on the radio hoping to catch a few Christmas carols, but the station that began blasting R&B versions of “Silent Night” before Thanksgiving had already returned to its regular programming. The station was showcasing hits from 2011 that were not music to my {apparently old, fuddy-duddy} ears. Before I turned the radioRead the whole post >>

Holding On

During a recent homily, the priest said that in order to fully appreciate and understand poetry, you have to slow down. The same is true for motherhood. If all we’re doing is racing around from one activity to the next, our days can easily become an exhausted blur. If we’re too focused on the messesRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
