Thanks, but no thanks

After she was finished doing this: (4-year-old is biting her toenails in case the photo isn’t clear.) She very sweetly asked, “Want some?” Um, no thanks. (Photos such as this will be securely archived as they may be useful in scaring off future boyfriends*.) *My husband and I recently encouraged her to date her daddyRead the whole post >>

My Most Recent Parental Epiphany

Rachel, 4, was recently playing quietly alone upstairs in the room she shares with her big sister. My husband and I were downstairs with Mary Elizabeth, 2. Madeline was over at a friend’s house. After I’d read a few books to Mary Elizabeth, she asked if she could go see Rae. “Of course,” I said.Read the whole post >>

Don’t Leave Home Without This

As a busy and sometimes frazzled mom of littles, I may desire long blocks of time devoted to contemplative prayer, but life as it is right now is messy, noisy, and full of interruptions. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
